How should news be written?

April 27, 2008

Indymedia began a decade ago in Seattle for the G8 and London for the “Reclaim the streets” Mayday celebrations. Neither of these events would be covered properly in the commercial or state media. They thus generated their own newsvalue & media outlets. I was in London for the Mayday event and found myself taking part in the first interviews on magnetic tape which would form part of the first Indymedia news gathering in Europe. But the world has moved on. Most European countries have long gone past valuing the role of their local indymedia. In many ways it is a sandbox which introduces people to concepts of non-heirarchial media organisation. I would suggest that those interested in forming a new Indymedia Ireland node or in forming an alternative look at Wikinews as a template for anonymous accurate news gathering & read the guidelines on Wikipedia for Indymedia contributors.
